Karate is a martial art developed in Okinawa and was originally known as te (手), "hand" and was born under the influence of Chinese Martial Arts. Karate is predominantly a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open hand techniques such as knife hand, spear-hand and palm-heel strikes.
In our style (Te-Shin-Kai) and we also use grappling, throws, joint locks, restraints and vital point strikes where the style is deemed more of a self defence rather than just a sport with rules or the game.
A karate practitioner is called a karateka (空手家). A practitioner of true Japanese martial arts are also known as a Budo-ka or practitioner of "the Way!" The Way refers to the conquering the three battle we al face, that being the harmony of mind, body and spirit (Sanchin).
